"Mash Out
Posse" serves as more of a promotional tool than an official
album for Brownsville's finest who in an effort to capitalize on their
recent tour with Linkin Park revisit their catalog adding rock/metal
tracks to their vocals with production handled by Shiner Massive.
The rock/rap hybrid
has rarely worked. Cypress Hill did it well, and as much as some
people hate on them, Limp Bizkit did it well at times. Unfortunately
M.O.P. have etched their names onto the lists of failed attempts.
Their energy is undeniable, however when coupled with the heavy
guitars and epic sounding guitars it's just too much. Many of 13
tracks included on this experimental effort, just don't sound as if
they match and come across as being rushed to capitalize on their
recent tour.
"Fire" is
the one collaboration of styles that works. The instrumentation
through their verses is kept to a minimum and the combination of drums
and guitar work well. On "Hilltop Flava (No Sleep 'Til
Brooklyn)" Danz and Fames' verses are laid over an interpretation
of the classic Beastie Boys track "No Sleep Till Brooklyn."
My first thought as the beat dropped was that they had went too far,
why mess with something so classic? But when put in context of the
rest of this album, it works and made me glad they used it because if
it weren't for that song this album would become a coaster, and it may
still. As much as I'm feeling "Fire" and "Hilltop Flava"
to an extent, I don't forsee them having any replay value whatsoever.
